Former BlueClaw Harman Makes Big League Debut
Published on: 4/28/2008

Phillies second baseman records first Major League hit on Friday

When Jimmy Rollins was placed on the disabled list after spraining his ankle, there was no clear cut favorite to replace him on the Phillies roster. But when the decision had to be made, it was former BlueClaw Brad Harman that got the chance to make his Big League debut.

Harman spent the 2005 season in Lakewood, hitting .303 with 11 home runs and 58 RBIs while primarily playing shortstop. He continued to move through the minor league system at second base, before getting called up l-

ast week from Double-A Reading.

Harman made his first appearance with the Phillies as a pinch hitter on Tuesday, before getting his first ever start against the Pirates on Friday.

As MLB.com reports, Harman is trying to make the best of his first stint in the Major Leagues.

Harman relishes first big league start

Australia native plays second base, collects first hit, RBI, run

By Chris Adamski / Special to MLB.com

PITTSBURGH -- Brad Harman may have grown up in Australia, but even he is familiar with story of Wally Pipp.

Pipp, of course, was the player who missed a game at first base for the Yankees in 1925, watching Lou Gehrig take over and play at first -- for the next 14 years, as Gehrig set the all-time record for consecutive games played with 2,130, until Cal Ripken broke it in 1995.

With Harman making his first Major League start Friday in Pittsburgh while former National League Most Valuable Player Ryan Howard watched, could he end up relegating Howard, a first baseman, into being the next Pipp?

"I don''t know if that''s going to happen right here," Harman said with a laugh. "I''m just going to go in and have some fun and play hard and do what I do."
